The Budoff–Williams House of Old Wethersfield is one of Connecticut’s most remarkable surviving examples of early colonial domestic architecture. Built around 1711 for David Buttolph, the home offers a rare and authentic glimpse into life at the turn of the 18th century, long before architectural styles became formalized or decorative trends took hold.
The house is a classic First Period timber-frame saltbox, defined by its steeply pitched roofline, asymmetrical massing, and massive central chimney. These features were driven by practicality rather than design fashion, reflecting the needs of early New England settlers who built with available materials and prioritized durability, warmth, and function. The central chimney served as the heart of the home, providing heat, light, and a focal point for daily life.
While modest in outward appearance, the interior of the Budoff–Williams House contains an extraordinary amount of original material. Hand-hewn beams, exposed framing, and period construction details remain intact, showcasing the skill and resourcefulness of early colonial craftsmen. These elements make the structure not only historically significant, but also highly sensitive to improper repairs or modern construction methods.
Today, the Budoff–Williams House is preserved as a museum property, ensuring its architectural legacy remains accessible to future generations. Preservation at this level requires careful attention to original materials and building science—particularly when it comes to chimneys, foundations, and masonry components that must continue to function as they did centuries ago.
Champs Masonry & Chimney was entrusted with rebuilding the home’s chimney and restoring sections of the stone and brick foundation using breathable lime mortar. This historically appropriate material allows moisture to move naturally through the masonry, protecting the original structure and preventing long-term damage. Proper restoration ensures the house remains structurally sound while honoring the techniques used by its original builders more than 300 years ago.
Homes like the Budoff–Williams House stand because of thoughtful preservation, not replacement. By respecting traditional materials and methods, historic masonry restoration helps safeguard Connecticut’s earliest homes—allowing them to continue telling the story of endurance, craftsmanship, and early American life.
